Weekend

Saturday
On Saturday I went to play tennis with Philippe and Olivier at Bond University. Olivier took my bike and he is doing very well! We had good fun and the weather was beautiful.
Tennis:

For lunch we went to Fish Market with Denis (one of our roommates and some friends) because Denis was leaving to Vietnam for work on Saturday night. Fish market is a type of restaurant where you pick your own fish from the ice . Then they cook it for you. When it is ready, they call your number and you can get your fish and chips. It was delicious! Olivier and Phil had salmon and I had a fish of which I forgot the name and we had some prawns .... mmmmmmm! So good.

On friday night I had put my bike on Bikesale.com because I want to buy the bike of Denis. Back home, I saw that I had two emails from interested people. I was so happy... but unfortunately they were scam... suspicious buyers. They wanted to buy the bike without having a look at it first... they both had a very busy job so they would send someone of their courier company..... I didn't trust it!

Sunday
After a good breakfast we went to the Dream World Resort for a Jet Ski ride.

Now I went on my bike and Olivier took some pictures.
We decided to take 2 jetski's for half an hour, It was amazing! Sooo much fun!

and more pics

After the jet ski we could relax in the swimming pools of the Sea World resort. Phil and Olivier had a swim (for me it was too cold :-)). Then we drove back home to relax

It's Sunday night already... :-( The weekends go too fast!

Cheers,
Jessie

bike's Road trip (Phil & Denis)

Today was my first day of vacation, Denis and I had planned to go on day ride and enjoy some windy roads of Gold Coast hinterland. We left the house at 8:30 AM, after a quick breakfast. We stopped at the petrol station to fill up our tanks. We were finally ready to hit the road.

We started by going to Springbrook, (Springbrook is a magnificent natural park about 20 miles away from Robina up in the mountain, we’ve been there many times and Jessie talked about it in this blog quite often). Despite the staggering weather we enjoyed today. The more we were climbing the colder it was getting, Therefore,  once we reached the top we decided to go on towards the Natural bridge (another 40 miles from Springbrook).

We were not excepting 20% slope down hill. We could see Robina and Surfer Paradise on one side and the hinterland on the other. It was sincerely breathtaking.
On the way to Natural Bridge, we stopped to take some pictures. (abandoned houses)
and other things

Once we arrived at Natural bridge. we took a stroll to have a closer look at it. About 30 minutes later we hopped back on our bikes and stopped at a the only shop we could find. They were nothing healthy in that thing but in this great Australian tradition,  we soldiered on and bought Doritos with sauce, bread and cheese.

In this shop, we saw an interesting map and decided to go up to “funny named” Mont WARNING.
Unfortunately, we took a wrong turn and then another wrong turn, soon enough we were lost, our sat-nav battery were dead so we kept going. We got to a point where the road was not sealed. No need to precise that our bike are not Dirt bike, slick tyres have no grip at all on sand.
Stupidly we kept going, could not exceed 15M/h, and it went on for ever. We stayed stuck at low speed for about an hour or so.
Finally we made a final stop at a hippy town and ate something. Our muscles were soared, we were tired so after 6 hours in the mountain we made our way to the highway and came back home at about 4:00 PM.

Currumbin zoo

On Saturday Phil had to study (exam on Tuesday), so I went with Olivier and Denis, who had an exam on Saturday morning, to the Currumbin wildlife sanctuary.

First we saw the Koala's. They are so cute! I wish I could have one...

Then we went on to feed the kangaroos!
After the kangaroos we saw some other animals and then we decided to do the challenge circuit. This is a circuit in the trees with ropes and so on and this was included in the ticket. First we had to see a short movie about the instructions and how to move safe in the circuit :-) Then we could start. The first part, the green track, was very easy! We took a lot of pics and were laughing a lot. After half an hour we went on on the red track which was a bit more difficult but still ok. Then we chose the black track which was harder and higher. This was hard! My arms were exhausted and I was going slower and slower... But we made it! :-) Some photo's:

After the circuit we were so hungry! We didn't see the other animals and went to Burleigh Heads for lunch.

THen we went to Aldi, had diner, ...

3 Minute competition! first prize on people's choice!

Monday and Tuesday afternoon I went with Mike, another PhD student who is my office, to theatre 3 to practice our 3 minute speeches. The first time we practiced was never good, the second time better and the third time was good! But when we practiced more it became worse... Sometimes we started to add things that we had never said before :-) so time to stop after three practices. We decided to make a sign after 1min, 2min and 2min45.

Wednesday I practiced 2 times in the office with Mike in the morning... I made a huge mistake the first time... Normally I would start with... "Goeiemiddag allemaal, mijn naam is jessie en mijn onderwerp is... Oh sorry, this should be in English right?" and I said in my first practice: " "Goeiemiddag allemaal, mijn naam is jessie en mijn onderwerp is... Oh sorry, you don't understand English... "
Oops! Happily this didn't happen on the competition.

At 11am we took some pictures with the whole group at Bond.

Then we went to the theatre. The PhD students were sitting on the first row in the order of the speeches, I was the 7th.

By the time the competition started the theatre was more than full! At least 130 people. They could all vote for people's choice. And the 3 jury members chose a winner, 2nd and 3rd too. Philippe and his brother, and Laureen and Denis came to support me. Also Popi was there!

This was my Bio that was read before I presented:

Jessie Brouwers graduated in 2009 at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium with a Masters in Physical Education and Movement Sciences (specialising in sports management) with the highest distinction. Since graduating, Jessie worked for six months as a researcher in the sports management department at Free University and in January 2010 she was offered a scholarship to conduct a PhD at Bond University, Queensland, Australia. Jessie has played tennis since she was six and she started coaching seven years ago. Jessie’s passion for tennis also leads her current PhD interest in elite development in tennis and sport policies of different nations.

My presentation went so well!!! No mistakes. Everything was clear! I had 2min30. The audience was laughing when I made the little jokes.  At the end the people gave me a warm applause! After the 13 presentation we had free drinks and Pizza! A lot of people that I did't know came to me to say that they enjoyed my presentation. Philippe saw that a lot of people ticked my name for the people's choice!

After half an hour we could go inside again for the results. No first, second or third prize from the jury... (achteraf hoorde ik dat ik vierde was!). Then the prizes for public choice...! First, Jessie Brouwers! I was so happy! I won a hotel voucher of 250$! I am sure I am going to enjoy this!

This was such a great experience! I presented in a way I had never presented before! And the people loved it! It was a great practice for my confirmation which is the first of September!

Here is in words the presentation I did:

Goeiemiddag allemaal, welkom. Oops sorry.. Have to speak English. Lets start over again. My name is Jessie and my topic is about tennis success and elite sport policy.
Most of you will know Kim Clijsters Roger Federer or maybe Aussie, Sam stosur. Right?
The question is: What made these players so successful, and why are some nations more successful than others? And what I am interested in is;  what is the role of national policies in elite sport success?

At the end of 2009, Australia had more than twice as many top 1000 tennis players in the world. Why is Australia more successful in the top 1000 compared to Belgium? I decided to fly over from Belgium to find out myself.
Of course, population and wealth play an important role in tennis success of nations. It is normal that a big and wealthy country with a high population size is more successful compared to small and poor countries, However, nations cannot influence these factors easily.
I decided to focus on what nations CAN change, namely sport policy. This includes areas such  as funding for sport, facilities, coaches, availability of competition, support for athletes, and many many other factors.

I want to analyse the relationship between all these factors and elite sport success in tennis in order to optimise the role of sport policies in determining elite success in tennis.
The problem is; we don’t know these factors in detail yet, so I have to identify them.
Therefore, I will interview “users of elite sport policy” such as elite tennis players, high performance directors, coaches and club leaders. The main question we will ask these people will be: what factors determine international tennis success of a country? And Why?
Once we know the factors that lead to international tennis success, we will analyse how they are implemented in Belgium and Australia. I will make an in depth analysis of the Belgian and Australian sport policy. This will reveal strengths and weaknesses of both countries. By comparing the policies, countries will know how to invest their recourses in a more appropriate way in order to be more successful!
The most important outcome of this research is the knowledge and the instruments for countries to measure their sport policy and to compare them against other competitors. The aim is to use this knowledge and instruments in the future to benchmark sport policies of nations in order to improve policies.  This was my research.
Game set and match, thank you

The rat is history! We killed it!

When I came back home, I worked a bit in the room... and I could hear the rat again! Olivier could hear it too... We had put some more poison in the drawers.

We had dinner all together: Tacos. After dinner I practiced my presentation for the three minute competition for Denis, Laureen, Phil, Olivier and Isa. It took 2.44min this time. It works well now, but I need someone to do a sign at 1min, 2min and 2min30sec. The presentation was ok, but I have to take more breaks between the sentences.

After the presentation we played the card game Yaniv! I played final against Laureen. She won, but it was close!!!

Before we went to bed, Phil and me decided to take everything out of the drawers and to put more poison. It looked like this:

When phil took some plastic out of the drawer and one of the tank bags, suddenly the rat felt on the ground. DEAD!!!! Victory!!!! Now we just have to hope that his family is not in the house too...

Sooo, I am so happy that I could finally put this news online :-)

Wednesday more news about the 3 minute competition!

Springbrook!

ON Saturday, we (Phil, Jessie, Denis, Laureen and Olivier, the brother of phil) went on a day trip to Springbrook. One car, my bike and the bike of Denis (Phil's bike is in the garage at the moment). Denis and Phil started on the bikes. First we went to a service station to get gas for my bike and then we went to Subway to buy the lunch.  Then we took Springbrook road and we enjoyed the nice sceneries on the way.
The first stop was at a look out point:
After the stop, the girls took over the bikes:

The next stop was at a picnic place at the end of Springbrook road. We had our lunch with a beautiful view!
After the lunch we went to another place where we could do a little walk. We went again to the Twin Falls. Some Pics:

After the walk we went to the little house/ cafeteria where we always go when we go to Springbrook. We had a warm drink to warm up for the trip back home because on the bikes it was quite cold! We played cards (Yaniv) and Oliver was the winner.

My bike!

When we arrived home, I went on a little trip with Laureen. Laureen took my bike and I took Denis' bike. Back home, we made pasta with salmon for dinner. After dinner we watched Saving Private Ryan. Then we went to bed because we were exhausted! At 1am Laureen woke us up... The rat was in her room... After checking everything and putting more poison, we went back to bed.

Sunday was rest day. I have cleaned my bike. Hopefully the guy that is interested in my bike will come soon. He called me a few days ago to ask more information and he told me he will come with a friend to see it... Hopefully he wants to buy my bike so that I can buy Denis' bike which is a lot newer!

Bye!
Jessie
